Workplace Accidents

It is estimated that 500,000 people in the UK are suffering
illness that has been caused by stress in the workplace, with a
further 5 million people reporting themselves as being very or
extremely stressed whilst at work. Stress at work also affects
people’s life outside work too, with 55% of full time workers
saying that they took their stress home with them at the end of
the day

Workplace Risks - Respiratory

  • Asbestosis is a chronic inflammatory medical condition affecting the parenchymal tissue of the lungs. It occurs agter long-term, heavy exposure to asbestos, eg in mining. Sufferers have severe dyspnea (shortness of breath) and are at increased risk regarding several different types of lung cancer.

  • Silicosis (also known as Grinder's disease and Potter's rot) is a form of pneumoconiosis caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust, and is marked by inflammation and scarring in forms of nodular lesions in the upper lobes of the lungs.
The full name for this disease when caused by the specific exposure to fine silica dust found in volcanoes is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, and at 45 letters it is the longest word in the English language. (The name has been described as a "trophy word" -- its only job is to serve as the longest word.)
Silicosis (especially the acute form) is characterized by shortness of breath, fever, and cyanosis (bluish skin). It may often be misdiagnosed as pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), pneumonia, or tuberculosis
  • Pneumoconiosis, also known as "coal workers' pneumoconiosis", miner's asthma, orblack lung disease, is a lung condition caused by the inhalation of dust, characterized by formation of nodular fibrotic changes in lungs. These changes may be in the form of industrial bronchitis, a condition which abates 3 to 6 months following the ceasation of exposure, or permanent changes in the lung parenchyma, taking the form of macules, micronodules, macronodules, or progressive massive fibrosis. The changes may be exhibited on chest x-rays or CT scans of the chest. Rarely does simplepneumoconiosis cause significant pulmonary problems. Coal miners with simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis with obstructive airways disfunction usually have been or are tabocco smokers
Workplace Risks - Machinery Accidents
Operating machines is a r risky occupation, especially industrial large, dangerous machines. When employees are not trained and don't know how to properly use machinery or equipment, they risk such injuries as broken bones, amputated limbs and crushed fingers. Safeguarding machinery decreases accidents and keeps employees who use the machines safer. The use of Safety wear at all times is highly recommended
