Explore Natural Beauty While Vacationing In The Mojave National Preserve

By Paul Smith

Vacationing in the Mojave National Preserve provides travelers with a wealth of sun, fun and beauty. The area was established in 1994 as a result of the California Desert Protection Act. It is nestled between the Joshua Tree National Parks and Death Valley as well as Palm Springs and Las Vegas.

A trip to the desert may not be what immediately comes to mind when planning an excursion. However, the volcanic formations such as the Cinder Cone Lava Beds and other natural features such as the Keslo Dunes and the Cima Dome make this a popular destination. There is something for everyone to do and see.

The Keslo Dunes are made up of several groupings of dunes. The erosion that occurs during dry periods in the area formed them. When the periods ended, vegetation would grow and lock each dune into place. This area is known for its "singing sand." This phenomenon can be heard when a hiker climbs to the top of the sand and slides down. The rumble created produces this unique sound.

A tour through the Cinder Cone Lava Beds provides a stunning landscape of lava flows, volcanic rock and cinder cones. The area is one of evolution from millions of years ago and much more recently. The area also features the Cima Dome, which covers 70 square miles.

The climate of the area is variable. The summer time can bring temperatures over 100 degrees. The mountains can see snowfall in the winter. Rainfall depends on elevation. The lower areas receive around 4 inches each year while the mountains get close to 9. Hikers and campers should be prepared for warm days and cool nights.

Hiking is the most popular way to explore but horseback riding is another option. All pack animals such as mules, horses or even llamas are welcome on the trails and in the wilderness areas. Four-wheel drive vehicles provide an exciting way to see the preserve. Drivers should ensure the off road readiness of their vehicles. Plenty of off pavement trails and roads are ready to be explored. Drivers and passengers may even meet up with some of the wildlife of the area such as mules and cattle.

Vacationing in the Mojave National Preserve is a time to be surrounded by one of the most beautiful areas the world has to offer. Whether explored on foot, on horseback or in a four-wheel drive vehicle, this desert wonderland promises wonderful experiences and memories.
