The Investigation of a Workplace Accident - Info Barrel

The Investigation of a Workplace Accident - Info Barrel: "Accident and incident are two words that are often interchanged. But in reality, their definition is very different from one another. An accident is defined as “an unplanned, unwanted but controllable event which disrupts activity and may cause injury to people or property damage.”

Meanwhile, incident is “an unplanned or unwanted event which disrupts the work process but can only potentially cause injury, harm, or damage to persons or property.” It may be a series of events which could lead to harm or damage.

In most scenarios, accident is used to describe both situations, and that includes in the workplace. Workplace accidents have to be investigated by a qualified person who has years of experience and full knowledge of the process."

Human Resource Executive Online - Story

Human Resource Executive Online - Story: "By Steve Tuckey

While critics on both the right and left have taken on the Obama administration for purportedly wobbling on issues ranging from financial regulation to Afghanistan, worker safety seems one area that the new team in Washington has charted a definite course correction from the past eight years.

Late last year, the Senate quickly confirmed David Michaels as the new director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Labor advocates cheered. Some business leaders -- who fear a costly new era of regulation is upon them -- jeered.

Peg Seminario, director of safety and health for the AFL-CIO in Washington, says the Michaels appointment represents an important step forward after eight years of what she terms 'neglect, inaction and, in some cases, hostility.'"

Accident Investigation - Essays - Hairozie

Accident Investigation - Essays - Hairozie: "When we carry out an accident investigation, we can realize that some accident is simple and some are complex. An accident may have one or more events that can be causes. A thorough investigation of an accident will normally reveal three cause levels: basic, indirect, and direct. The direct cause is usually the result of one or more unsafe acts or unsafe conditions, or both. Unsafe acts and conditions are the ‘indirect causes’ or symptoms. In turn, indirect causes are usually traceable to poor management policies and decisions, or..."

As safety becomes more and more important in the workplace, accidents occurrences in the workplace are also increasing in frequency. It has become noticeable even in offices where traditionally people would feel safer. The workplace has also expanded. The road has become a workplace, the school has become a workplace, the hospital has become a workplace.

We can try to ignore the trend and face costly litigation or minimise the risk by learning to choose appropriate safety work wear and ensure our staff is well trained in occupational health & safety

Farmer, 82, dies in trenching accident - Brockville Recorder and Times - Ontario, CA

Farmer, 82, dies in trenching accident - Brockville Recorder and Times - Ontario, CA: "An elderly farmer and tile drainage contractor from the Jasper area died Tuesday evening of injuries suffered after being buried while working in a trench at a Kidd Road farm that morning.

Bert Maitland, 82, owner of Maitland Farm Drainage Ltd., succumbed to his injuries about 8 p.m. in Kingston General Hospital.

'Anyone you can think of who is of any size in agriculture in Leeds and Grenville and even beyond, my dad has touched them,' Don Maitland told the Recorder and Times on Wednesday.
Don said his father took on the toughest of drainage projects that would discourage other contractors and saw the jobs through to completion.

Moreover, Bert Maitland had a reputation for giving a hard day's work and an honest appraisal of the job that won over many of his colleagues in farming.

He said his dad fell into a ditch on Ed Lappan's dairy farm north of Lansdowne on Tuesday morning and the earth collapsed on top of him.

Another son, Jim Maitland, who was at the scene working on a tile drainage job, dug his father out of the ditch before emergency assistance arrived, said Don.

Rentokil Initial employee sues after temporary blindness - Accident Compensation Helpline: "A man who was injured at work, while employed by Rentokil Initial at Milton Keynes shopping centre, has won a court case against his employers and is now seeking compensation.

The accident happened when the employee was pruning some cacti plants and he accidentally shot the plants’ toxic sap into his eye and onto his neck and arm. The sap caused the man’s cornea to burn and he was blind for a week as a result. He also had nasty blisters on his face from the sap. He was forced to take six weeks off after the accident at work to recuperate.

The man, who no longer works for Rentokil, claims he was not given proper guidance and training on pruning the cactus plants, which were up to 30ft tall. He was also found not to have been wearing the correct protective clothing for the job, after a health and safety investigation took place."

Gulf Cleanup Training Ignores Advice From Health Agency, Official Says - ProPublica

Gulf Cleanup Training Ignores Advice From Health Agency, Official Says - ProPublica: "As we've reported, workplace safety experts have expressed concern that Gulf oil spill responders aren't getting enough safety training. On Wednesday, we spoke with a federal official who said the four-hour safety course that BP is providing to Gulf cleanup workers lacks basic information on health risks and is too short to cover the necessary material.

Joseph Hughes, director of the worker training program at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, said the course fails to incorporate important information. Among the subjects not included are chemical inhalation, the health effects of dispersants, and the risks of direct contact with weathered crude oil."

Fatal Accident Compensation - Help Claiming At This Difficult Time

Fatal Accident Compensation - Help Claiming At This Difficult Time: "In situations involving a fatal accident, it would be especially wise to bring on an accident compensation solicitor. As a third party, they can work to gather any evidence on behalf of the family members of the deceased. When it comes to compensation, a solicitor will also help to come to a fair compensation payout. Although monetary compensation can never make up for such a personal loss, it is important to make up for any costs that were incurred and any future financial losses that are jeopardized as a result of the accident. Accident compensation can cover costs that may have resulted such as medical expenses up until the time of death and funeral expenses. Fatal accident compensation will also take into account the financial situation that the remaining family members of the victim are left in. For example, if the victim was the sole or significant income provider for a household, or carer of a child then they will be compensated to make up for it."

PR-USA.net - OSHA deputy assistant secretary testifies before Senate Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Saf: "Jordan Barab, deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, today testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety. His statement, as prepared, appears below.
'Chair Murray, Ranking Member Isakson, and members of the subcommittee, thank you for inviting me to join you this morning for this necessary conversation about worker safety in our nation's energy production industries. This issue has most recently been brought to the public's attention in the most tragic way possible, with deaths of 11 workers and injuries to 17 others as the result of the April 20th explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling platform. The Deepwater Horizon disaster occurred even as OSHA continues to deal with the ramifications of the 2005 fire and explosion at BP's Texas City refinery that killed 15 workers and injured more than 170 others, and to help our Washington State Plan partners investigate the April explosion at a Tesoro refinery that left seven more workers dead."

These classes will cover information that will allow you to adequately respond in the event that some type of emergency should occur during the welding process. You need to become educated about the correct methods to use while welding, as well as the preparations that must be taken prior to starting the job."
