Farmer, 82, dies in trenching accident - Brockville Recorder and Times - Ontario, CA

Farmer, 82, dies in trenching accident - Brockville Recorder and Times - Ontario, CA: "An elderly farmer and tile drainage contractor from the Jasper area died Tuesday evening of injuries suffered after being buried while working in a trench at a Kidd Road farm that morning.

Bert Maitland, 82, owner of Maitland Farm Drainage Ltd., succumbed to his injuries about 8 p.m. in Kingston General Hospital.

'Anyone you can think of who is of any size in agriculture in Leeds and Grenville and even beyond, my dad has touched them,' Don Maitland told the Recorder and Times on Wednesday.
Don said his father took on the toughest of drainage projects that would discourage other contractors and saw the jobs through to completion.

Moreover, Bert Maitland had a reputation for giving a hard day's work and an honest appraisal of the job that won over many of his colleagues in farming.

He said his dad fell into a ditch on Ed Lappan's dairy farm north of Lansdowne on Tuesday morning and the earth collapsed on top of him.

Another son, Jim Maitland, who was at the scene working on a tile drainage job, dug his father out of the ditch before emergency assistance arrived, said Don.
