Officials pulled an employee of a local plumbing contractor from trench at 909 Northeast Chambers Parkway in Ankeny, as reported by the Des Moines Register.

It took rescue teams about an hour to pull the Plumbing Co. employee from the trench, which was located on the site of a future housing development. The worker was reportedly conscious and talking when he was pulled from the ground.

Rescue teams discovered him in a half-standing, half-kneeling position in a 5-foot trench with more then 10 inches of dirt on top of him. His co-workers were able to move dirt away so that he could breathe until he was rescued.

Ankeny deputy fire chief Rob Chiappano said, “When we arrived we couldn’t see him, but we could hear him at the bottom of the trench.”"

He said his dad fell into a ditch on Ed Lappan's dairy farm north of Lansdowne on Tuesday morning and the earth collapsed on top of him.

Another son, Jim Maitland, who was at the scene working on a tile drainage job, dug his father out of the ditch before emergency assistance arrived, said Don.

The accident happened when the employee was pruning some cacti plants and he accidentally shot the plants’ toxic sap into his eye and onto his neck and arm. The sap caused the man’s cornea to burn and he was blind for a week as a result. He also had nasty blisters on his face from the sap. He was forced to take six weeks off after the accident at work to recuperate.

The man, who no longer works for Rentokil, claims he was not given proper guidance and training on pruning the cactus plants, which were up to 30ft tall. He was also found not to have been wearing the correct protective clothing for the job, after a health and safety investigation took place."

BBC News - East Ayrshire council fined over electrician's death: "A council has been fined 56,000 over the death of an electrician who was killed when a work platform collapsed in a school gym hall.

Robert McGill suffered severe brain injuries after the accident at Kilmarnock Academy last April.

East Ayrshire Council admitted a charge under health and safety legislation.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that the council has since amended its working and training procedures.

Sheriff Seth Ireland said the level of fine was not to be taken as a value on the life of Mr McGill.

He added: 'The loss of Mr McGill to his family must be regarded as being beyond any monetary figure and be priceless.'"

Official Warns Grim Work Safety Conditions in China: "China's work safety conditions remained grim as the number of work safety accidents remained large, illegal production still posed challenges and safety management was still loose, a senior official said on Sunday.

Yang Yuanyuan, deputy chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, made the remarks at a forum on work safety in Beijing.

In the first five months this year, 499 people were dead or missing in 36 major workplace accidents such as coal mine flood and gas explosion, a rise of nearly 40 percent from the same period a year ago, Yang said.

Notably, five severe accidents, each with a death toll of more than 30, had happened so far this year, killing 181 lives, up nearly 70 percent year on year, he said.

Yang noted the grave picture reflected poor enforcement of safety rules, and enterprises' mere pursuit of output in sacrifice of work safety.

He said the government would make continuous efforts to bring those accidents under control.
