Unions press penalties for workplace violations | Labor & Employment > Workplace Health & Safety from AllBusiness.com: "Major accidents in the petroleum and mining industries that resulted in 47 deaths demand tougher government regulation and enforcement, union leaders and a government official said Tuesday.

'There is a pattern in recent weeks of fires, major injuries and fatalities in the oil sector, and we're not immune to the fact that the same things are going on in the mining and other industries,' said Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers.
Gerard, United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts and David Michaels, assistant secretary for occupational safety and health at the Department of Labor, talked to reporters during a first-day break of a two-day emergency meeting of USW oil industry workers. The meeting is being held in the Pittsburgh Hilton hotel."
